COVID-19 has caused many of us to cancel our travel plans this year. Staying at home has become the norm, so how do we hack our new normal for a staycation? Kitchens by Countryside has come up with a few fun “hacks” for making staying home feel like a vacation..
Turn your backyard into a beach for a day. Set up beach chairs and towels around a Minnidip inflatable pool, make a pitcher of lemonade, and add a sandbox for the kids. Just add sunscreen for your day at the beach!
Host your own film festival for your family. Choose a series everyone likes, Harry Potter, Avengers, or Star Wars, for example, or choose a theme and films to fit. Get dressed up to walk the “red carpet,” serve fancy hors d’oeuvres or make some gourmet popcorn to nosh on.
Can’t get away to the wilderness? Pitch a tent in the yard! Start a campfire or use a portable firepit for cooking dinner — hot dogs and baked beans — and roast marshmallows to eat as you tell scary stories.
Just because you can’t go (or don’t want to risk going) out to eat, it doesn’t mean you can’t try a new type of cuisine. Choose a country or area from your heritage and plan a cooking night. Decorate with maps and décor from the area you’ve chosen. Everyone make one dish and celebrate the culture with food!
Learn Something New
Make your staycation an educational experience with an online class. With classes available for everything from screenwriting to yoga to cooking and more, you can pick up some new skills right from home.
Tour a Museum or Zoo
Many museums offer virtual tours online, including The Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Some museum tours are interactive!
The San Diego Zoo offers several live cams of their wildlife. Spend some time watching the elephants, penguins, tigers, pandas, and more!
We know that nothing can take the place of a vacation, but until our pandemic restrictions ease a bit more, enjoy a staycation. And whatever you decide to do during your staycation, we hope you have a great time!
